Professor, Department of in Obstetrics and Gynecology
with specialization in Epidemiology and/or
Digital Health in the Perinatal / Maternal-Child Health
field
General Information
The
Université de Sherbrooke is inviting applications for
a full-time, tenure-track position as a professor in
epidemiology and/or digital health in the perinatal and
maternal-child health field. This regular position is
affiliated with the Department of Obstetrics and
Gynecology within the Faculty of Medicine and Health
Sciences.
About the Faculty
The Faculty of Medicine
and Health Sciences (FMSS) at the Université de Sherbrooke
stands out for its exceptional work and study environment.
From its inception, the faculty integrated a medical
school and a university hospital on the same site. It now
offers over 100 academic programs across Sherbrooke,
Longueuil, Saguenay, and Moncton, tailored to the needs of
the communities it serves.
The Faculty enjoys an excellent reputation thanks to its
pedagogical innovations, its consistent ability to adapt
to society’s evolving needs, and its world-class research.
It is internationally recognized as the only faculty in
Canada—and the only French-speaking faculty
worldwide—designated as a World Health Organization
Collaborating Centre for Health Education.
The Université de Sherbrooke ranks 11th among the top 50
research universities in Canada and 4th among Quebec
universities.
About the Department
The Department of
Obstetrics and Gynecology includes 25 professors
conducting diverse research in women's health, including
maternal and fetal health, gynecologic oncology, and
urogynecology/pelvic floor health. The department’s
collective expertise fosters a collaborative and highly
supportive environment for the development of early-career
researchers.
The Department aims to position a researcher at the
intersection of clinical, population-based, and academic
domains, adopting an ecosystemic and global perspective on
maternal, child, and family health. Substantial recent
datasets from perinatal and neurodevelopmental cohort
studies, along with mother-child biobanks, are available
for collaborative analytical work. The new Mother-Child
Care Center, scheduled to open in February 2026, will
provide an optimal environment for knowledge transfer—from
preclinical research to clinical application for patients.
Desired Profile
This position seeks to recruit a candidate holding a PhD
with complementary postdoctoral training and recognized
expertise in perinatal epidemiology and biostatistics
and/or bioinformatics. A solid understanding of core
topics related to maternal, fetal, and infant
morbidity/mortality, health services research,
epidemiological methods, and statistical techniques is
encouraged. Proficiency in statistical software and
techniques is required, and prior experience working with
large administrative perinatal databases will be
considered an asset.
We are looking for candidates who will develop an
independent and high-quality research program focused on
cutting-edge approaches in research design and data
analysis, including:
-
Advanced biostatistics and epidemiology,
-
Applications of artificial intelligence and machine
learning, and
-
Leveraging diverse data sources (e.g., electronic health
records, cohort studies, administrative health and
government data, clinical laboratory data, socioeconomic
data, and geospatial data).
Given the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s
commitment to advancing clinical and applied research, the
successful candidate is expected to establish strong
collaborations with research professors,
physician-professors, and clinician-researchers within the
department. Collaborations with other departments in the
FMSS—particularly Pediatrics and Internal Medicine—as well
as other faculties at the Université de Sherbrooke, will
be encouraged.
The selected candidate must also have a strong publication
record and a portfolio of significant achievements. Their
research expertise should be applicable to prevention or
obstetric care in areas such as general obstetrics,
maternal-fetal medicine, developmental origins of health
and disease (DOHaD), reproductive health, and research
methodology and data analysis. This profile targets an
early-career researcher eligible for the FRQ-S Junior 1 or
Junior 2 career award competitions.
The research program should align with the Department’s
strategic research development plan, specifically:
-
Strengthening maternal-child health research by building
a critical mass of researchers and clinicians in the
field, and
-
Continuing to develop expertise in bioinformatics,
methodology, and statistical analysis in collaboration
with other institutional strengths.
The candidate is expected to seek external funding to
support their research program.
Responsibilities
-
Teach at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate
levels.
-
Develop fundamental or applied research activities.
-
Supervise graduate students.
-
Participate in departmental, faculty, and university
life.
-
Contribute to community service.
Requirements
-
Hold a Ph.D. with postdoctoral expertise in
epidemiology, biostatistics, or bioinformatics, applied
to the field of perinatal/maternal-child health.
-
Demonstrate a strong interest and aptitude for
university-level teaching and pedagogy.
-
Show a strong proficiency in research (disciplinary and
interdisciplinary), knowledge transfer, and innovation.
-
Demonstrate the ability to effectively supervise
graduate students.
-
Have a publication record in peer-reviewed international
journals that reflects research excellence.
-
Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative
spirit, and the ability to work effectively in a team.
-
Show leadership, initiative, and excellent communication
skills, with the ability to interact harmoniously and
effectively with various internal and external partners.
-
Be able to comply with the requirements of responsible
conduct in research.
-
Be able to teach in French or acquire this ability
rapidly.
