The Division of Epidemiology and Community Health, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota seeks a fulltime, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor with expertise in infectious disease epidemiology to join a program in infectious disease research and training.

About the Job

Responsibilities of this position are to develop a multipronged scholarly program in infectious disease epidemiology centered around research, teaching and service. The transmissible nature of infectious diseases demands special methods for studying their epidemiology. To that end, our program is spearheading efforts to design a methods focused curriculum specific for infectious disease epidemiology. We seek candidates with expertise in infectious disease epidemiologic methods to help develop this cutting edge curriculum. They will also be expected to conduct epidemiologic research as Principal Investigator, maintain a track record of grant-funded research, author manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, and develop collaborations within the Division and across the School of Public Health (SPH). Responsibilities of this position also include mentorship of our MPH and PhD students on a wide variety of infectious disease topics.

The University of Minnesota is a large and energetic academic institution with an Academic Health Center consistin of the School of Public Health, School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing, and School of Veterinary Medicine. The School of Public Health is home to four Divisions including Biostatistics, Environmental Health, Health Policy & Management and our own Epidemiology and Community Health. Numerous opportunities exist for multi-disciplinary collaborations across the aforementioned Schools and Divisions. More broadly, there are also possibilities to partner with local hospitals and clinics, such as the Veterans Administration and Hennepin County Medical Center. Faculty in the infectious disease epidemiology program also have a strong history of collaboration with regional and international agencies, including the Minnesota Departments of Health and international partners across East Asia, West Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Faculty in the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health receive valuable support at the Division, School, and University levels from institutes such as the Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility, the Global Health Work Group, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the Office of Clinical and Academic Affairs. Finally, the multi-ethnic population of the Twin Cities, including Minnesota's immigrants, provides rich opportunities to conduct community engaged research with diverse and often underserved populations.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a human infectious disease epidemiology research background. Specific requirements for the position are:

1. Previous training in infectious disease epidemiology with a degree of PhD, DrPH, ScD, MD/MPH or equivalent;

2. Research experience in human infectious disease epidemiology;

3. Demonstrated history of successful external research funding or evidence of potential for obtaining external research funding;

4. Demonstrated successful graduate level or other comparable teaching experience or evidence of potential for teaching success; and

5. Evidence of a publication record in relevant peer-reviewed journals.

About the Department

The Division of Epidemiology and Community Health (http://www.sph.umn.edu/epi) provides a rich and collaborative environment for the investigation of the etiology, distribution, prevention, and control of infectious and non-infectious diseases, in both clinical and behavioral areas. The Division offers graduate training programs leading to the MPH, MS and PhD degrees, and has active pre- and post-doctoral training. It has 35 primary faculty who bring in over $30 million annually in sponsored research grants, and an additional 80 adjunct faculty. Current infectious disease faculty in the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health have research interests in sexually transmitted infections including HIV, vaccine preventable diseases including HPV, vector borne diseases including malaria, and other communicable diseases. Their research spans domestic and international sites including Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Ethiopia, Vietnam, and China. There are also opportunities for multidisciplinary collaborations with other colleagues in the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health, whose research includes cancer, community health promotion, maternal and child health, nutrition, substance use, and cardiovascular disease. Globally, infectious diseases are a major source of morbidity and mortality that particularly affect disadvantaged and marginalized populations. The study of health disparities and addressing public health needs of disadvantaged and marginalized is an important focus of the Division.
