The
Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Arnold
School of Public Health (ASPH) at the University of South
Carolina (UofSC) invites applications for a tenure-track
position in Epidemiology at the rank of Assistant or Associate
Professor. This search is focused on recruiting a faculty
member with expertise in advanced epidemiologic research
methods.
The
successful applicant will be expected to maintain an active
research program, teach courses in advanced epidemiology
research methods and other epidemiology courses, mentor
graduate students, and contribute to the department and school
through professional service. A qualified candidate for the
rank of Assistant Professor will have an earned doctoral
degree in epidemiology by the beginning date of employment,
demonstrated evidence of high-quality scholarly research, and
the potential to successfully compete for external research
funding. A qualified candidate for the rank of Associate
Professor will have an earned doctoral degree in epidemiology,
a successful track record of competitive external funding in
support of research, and a teaching record commensurate with
experience.
Qualified
candidates will be capable of 1) teaching doctoral level
courses in the theory and application of epidemiologic
research methods that include causal inference, 2) enriching
our curriculum in epidemiologic research methods, and 3)
having strong potential to develop an independent research
program, either in epidemiologic research methods or in an
applied area of epidemiologic research. Examples of existing
epidemiology faculty expertise are nutrition, obesity, cancer,
neurodevelopmental disability, perinatal epidemiology,
infectious and parasitic diseases, health disparities,
environmental and occupational epidemiology, and
cardiometabolic outcomes (e.g., diabetes). Abundant
collaborative clinical research opportunities exist with other
medical units at UofSC.
UofSC is
a comprehensive Carnegie University of High Research Activity
and Community Engagement. Located in the capital city of
Columbia, UofSC has five Health Science Units in addition to
ASPH: 1) School of Medicine in Columbia 2) School of Medicine
in Greenville, 3) College of Nursing, 4) College of Pharmacy,
and 5) College of Social Work. Founded in 1975, the ASPH is
the second largest school of public health nationally among
public universities in terms of overall enrollment. ASPH
consists of six departments and several research centers that
address topics such as disease prevention, nutrition and
physical activity, cancer, health services and policy, rural
health, aging, and health disparities. The Department of
Epidemiology and Biostatistics is home to 31 faculty members,
20 in the Division of Epidemiology and 11 in the Division of
Biostatistics. The faculty’s robust research portfolio
includes funding from a broad spectrum of federal agencies
(e.g., NIH and CDC) and non-profit organizations. The
department has a rich tradition of producing outstanding
trainees. Currently 89 students are enrolled in our master’s
and doctoral degree programs. The department, school, and
university provide a strong collaborative environment for
interdisciplinary team science across the public health
