Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health
Beyond the Pill, a program of
the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at the
University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), is
recruiting for a Professional Researcher. Beyond the Pill
partners with health care providers, researchers and
educators to improve access and equity in contraceptive care
and other reproductive health services. We are an
interdisciplinary team of researchers, clinicians and
educators who contribute to science, policy and clinical
practice change in the US and globally.
We strongly encourage
individuals from groups historically excluded from research
and medicine to apply. These
positions, designed for early career PhD researchers, will
offer unique opportunities to gain the experience and skills
to become independent research scholars, including
developing ideas and partnerships. Researchers will
collaborate with members of the Bixby research community;
strengthen research designs and analysis skills; conduct
studies, including community-engaged research; develop
grant-writing and manuscript preparation skills; and present
at seminars and scientific or policy conferences.
For this position, we are
looking for a quantitatively-trained researcher with
expertise in the following areas: sexual and reproductive
health, contraceptive access, reproductive autonomy, racial
equity and justice, community-based participatory research
and/or health behavior research. Candidates must have
outstanding academic writing skills and a strong background
in study design and quantitative data analysis.
The Researcher will work
directly with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Cynthia
Harper, and other members of the team to design and conduct
research on contraceptive access and reproductive autonomy
among adolescents and young adults, as well as evaluations
among reproductive health providers. Responsibilities will
include conducting research, supervising research staff,
overseeing data collection and management, presenting at
scientific conferences and publishing papers in the
peer-reviewed literature. Study design, preparation of
proposals, and career development activities are also
important aspects of the position.
Key Duties
and Responsibilities:
• Develop research designs, data
collection methods and strategies for data management.
• Design, create and revise
study instruments to ensure quality data that correlates
with research objectives
• Engage in community-based
partnerships as a foundation of research.
• Serve as a liaison with
partner organizations and field sites.
• Assist in the recruitment,
training and direct supervision of research staff.
• Ensure that projects are
executed successfully and completed within time frames to
meet research objectives
• Conduct qualitative and
advanced quantitative analyses.
• Present study results at
scientific conferences.
• Write manuscripts for
peer-reviewed publication.
• Collaborate in the strategic
planning and preparing of research proposals.
• Communicate research to
stakeholders: Discuss research implications from policy,
advocacy and program perspectives; write final reports and
present results to funders.
• PhD, ScD or DrPH in
Demography, Epidemiology, Public Health, Health Services
Research, Sociology, Health Economics or related field, with
reproductive health expertise.
• Strong epidemiologic study
design and advanced quantitative skills, including
hierarchical, longitudinal analyses.
• Excellent communication
skills.
• Must be a strong conceptual
thinker with outstanding analytic and writing skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Expertise in contraceptive
access, reproductive autonomy, pregnancy research.
• Experience conducting research
with adolescents, young adults and hard to reach
populations and/or research with
health care providers.
• Distinguished publication
record in reproductive health research.
• Experience with collection and
analyses of qualitative data.
• Experience with proposal
writing and/or fundraising.
• Experience obtaining IRB
approval for human subjects research.
The position is hybrid,
including in-person work at the UCSF Mission Bay campus.
