POSITION DESCRIPTION

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

The applicant for this position must present evidence that clearly demonstrates the following: Scientific leadership and administration; NIH-funded and/or similar grant support; Commitment to the development of meaningful partnerships and interactions with research partners, junior faculty, and research associates

Required Experience:

Experience in managing research programs and raising funds for research, building collaborative relationships with the community, and conducting and managing empirical public health and health systems research and analysis, is required.

Typical Education or Training:

This individual will have a terminal degree (MD, PhD, or DrPH), in alcohol and addiction studies or a related field.

 

CAAS conducts research that addresses substance abuse in Alaska. Research activities center around the stimulation and coordination of interdisciplinary and collaborative studies and the promotion of scientific interchanges of alcohol and drug-related information. The focus of the position will be on health issues of particular relevance for Alaskan residents. Prospective research foci will include the determinants of substance abuse behaviors including alcohol, tobacco, and other harmful substances, protective factors associated with resilience in the face of such effects, and practical interventions to mitigate or treat such behaviors.

The Center for Alcohol and Addictions Studies (CAAS) was established by the Board of Regents in 1972 to address the problem of substance abuse in Alaska. The Center is housed within the Institute of Circumpolar Health Studies (ICHS) (http://www.ichs.uaa.alaska.edu) which is a health research institute within the College of Health (COH) at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA). CAAS conducts research that addresses substance abuse in Alaska. Research activities center around the stimulation and coordination of interdisciplinary and collaborative studies and the promotion of scientific interchanges of alcohol and drug-related information. 

The focus of the position will be on health issues of particular relevance for Alaskan residents. Prospective research foci will include the determinants of substance abuse behaviors including alcohol, tobacco, and other harmful substances, protective factors associated with resilience in the face of such effects, and practical interventions to mitigate or treat such behaviors. This position will work with interdisciplinary teams of UA faculty to conduct research contributing to the knowledge base regarding the role of social and physical determinants of population health in Alaska and the circumpolar north. The successful candidate will lead the CAAS-ICHS Addiction Studies, actively collaborate with state, national and international organizations in cooperative discussions, and conduct research and activities designed to improve health conditions in the circumpolar north. In addition, this position will supervise research staff and students.
