A postdoctoral fellowship position is available in the Department of Population and Data Sciences at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, a NCI designated comprehensive cancer center.

The interdisciplinary faculty in the Department of Population and Data Sciences conduct $15 million dollars of externally funded interdisciplinary population-based research annually.

This fellowship opportunity is supported by a National Cancer Institute-funded R01 (R01 CA 229834 PI: Pruitt). The successful applicant will join a collaborative interdisciplinary team of epidemiologists, biostatisticians, health services researchers, and clinicians; the fellow’s research program and training will be primarily directed by Sandi Pruitt, PhD. This position will provide opportunities to conduct high-impact epidemiologic research with population- data on several hundred thousand patients diagnosed with six different cancers, including breast, colorectal, kidney, liver and pancreatic cancer and  non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Using cancer registry data linked with Medicare claims, the research project is designed to assess how many patients diagnosed with these cancers have survived a prior primary cancer, and to quantify the impact of prior cancer on survival. The research team previously demonstrated that approximately 80% of cancer clinical trials exclude patients diagnosed with a prior cancer. Given the increasing number of cancer survivors in the U.S., findings from this research are particularly relevant for healthcare policy. The fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate on this project and answer additional research questions using these SEER-Medicare cohorts.

The successful applicant will perform data analyses and literature reviews and will be expected to assist with manuscript preparation and publish research results. He or she will also be encouraged to attend and present research results at scientific conferences, participate in study meetings, and develop and pursue their own synergistic research questions. The fellow will be provided opportunities to develop and polish any skills and experiences to prepare for future career goals. For example, there will be opportunities to obtain additional methodologic training via in-person or web-based courses, and on-campus training in grant-writing, career development, and leadership training. The fellow will be mentored to develop his or her own program of funded research.

We are seeking motivated applicants with rigorous training and experience in epidemiologic and/or biostatistical methods. Successful applicants will have a PhD, ScD, or DrPH in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, health services, informatics, or other related fields. Applicants should possess strong statistical, interpersonal, and communication skills. Experience with SAS, healthcare claims-based analysis, particularly Medicare claims, survival analysis, and analysis of SEER or other cancer registry data is highly desirable. Content knowledge or expertise related to cancer and cancer survivorship, particularly breast or colorectal cancer, is also desirable. Applicants with strong interest and methodologic skills in quantitative methods related to lead time bias and competing risks are particularly sought after.

Candidate review will start immediately, with an anticipated start date of Spring/Summer 2020.

Two years (with potential for an additional year), starting spring/summer 2020.

Information on our postdoctoral training program and benefits can be found in our
Postdoc Handbook or at http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/postdocs.

Interested individuals should send brief cover letter indicating their research interests and career goals, CV, and contact information for three references.
