Position Available: Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in
Epidemiology
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, at The
University of Maryland School of Public Health, College
Park invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant
Professor position in Epidemiology.

The Department’s mission is to improve health and reduce
health disparities in local communities, the state of
Maryland, and the nation. This is accomplished by
examining environmental, social and behavioral,
biological, and genetic factors using established
epidemiological and quantitative methods, as well as
developing new scientifically grounded approaches, that
are applied to identifying determinants of health and
discovering and evaluating primary and secondary
prevention strategies for chronic diseases and infectious
diseases. The Department offers an MPH degree in
epidemiology, and a PhD degree in epidemiology, an MPH
degree in biostatistics, and a PhD degree in biostatistics
and bioinformatics (jointly offered with the Department of
Mathematics). The department is committed to advancing

institutions. Our faculty members also interact with
faculty in the University of Maryland Institute for
Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), Center for
Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (CBCB), the Joint
Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM), the Maryland
Population Research Center (MPRC), the Maryland Institute
of Applied Environmental Health (MIAEH), and the
Biostatistics and Risk Assessment Center (BRAC),
University of Maryland School of Medicine at Baltimore, as
well as with researchers in other applied fields.
QUALIFICATIONS.
Qualified candidates should possess a doctoral degree in
Epidemiology and have a track record of scholarly
achievement in the stated field that supports
a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor
rank. Candidates are expected to develop an independent
research program that complements ongoing research
activities within the department utilizing
state-of-the-art epidemiological methodologies in the
areas of cancer, HIV/AIDS, social determinants of health,
environmental health, and social media data or big data in
population health. Candidates with expertise in
application of machine learning and health data analytics
in addressing pressing public health challenges of our
time (e.g. global pandemic, climate change) are
particularly encouraged to apply. Qualified candidates
will have demonstrated the ability to teach undergraduate
and graduate level epidemiology courses, mentor graduate
students, and collaborate on research projects. Candidates
who have experience working with a diverse range of
students, staff, and faculty and who can contribute to the
climate of equity, inclusivity, and belonging are
encouraged to apply.
RESPONSIBILITIES.
Successful candidates are expected to develop a nationally
recognized research program, engage in extramurally-funded
multidisciplinary research, teach epidemiology courses to
undergraduate and graduate students at both fundamental
and advanced levels, mentor graduate students, and engage
in university and professional service. They
will utilize effective
communication, interpersonal and collaborative knowledge
and skills with colleagues in the department, the school,
and the University to further departmental mission and
vision.
SALARY and
APPOINTMENT DATE.
This is a 9-month tenure-track appointment; salary is
competitive and commensurate with qualifications and
experience. Funding is guaranteed for 9 months annually,
with the potential to extend salary support to 12 months
with external funds. Appointments may begin in August 2024
or a mutually agreed-upon date.
