Business Title:
Assistant / Associate
Professor Public Health
Background: The
Washington State University (WSU) College of
Veterinary Medicine (CVM) including the Paul G.
Allen School of Global Health (Allen School), the
School of Molecular Biology (SMB) and the Department
of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology (VMP) in
Pullman, WA seeks to fill a permanent full-time (12
month) faculty position to initiate a newly
state-funded undergraduate program in public health.
This new degree will be a multi-college (including
health sciences colleges based in Spokane),
interdisciplinary degree program with multiple
threads, including an infectious disease thread
housed in the CVM. WSU-wide, this program will
include current faculty as well as new tenure-track
(research) and career-track (clinical and teaching)
faculty focused on educating a public health
workforce serving the needs of rural, remote and
underserved communities. The degree program will be
developed in collaboration with partners in the
department of health and other industry stakeholders
to develop creative academic solutions to workforce
needs. Opportunities to work with WSU global campus
and develop certificate programs and
micro-credentialing are also possible. Long term,
WSU will be developing a Master in Public Health
program. Areas of expertise include infectious
disease, behavioral health, global health, one
health and epidemiology. In addition, the CVM is
home to long-standing, highly recognized research
and training programs in infectious disease as well
as many post-DVM residency training programs.
Departmental home within the CVM will be based on
the best academic fit for the successful candidate.
Responsibilities: This
position will have a heavy emphasis on undergraduate
teaching, outreach and program building with a
reduced emphasis on scholarly activity. Initial
activities of programmatic development will, over
time, be replaced by teaching and/or scholarly
activity, dependent on candidate qualifications and
goals. Alternatively, this position could
incorporate long-term leadership and administration
of the program or recruitment and supervision of a
staff level program director. Final effort
distribution will be based on candidate
qualifications and interest.
Undergraduate teaching:
Develop introductory core courses and teach in the
public health undergraduate curriculum, for example,
Introduction to Public Health and Population Health.
Design and teach new classes as determined by
programmatic needs. Teaching in upper-level
undergraduate courses focused on areas of expertise
is encouraged.
Public Health program
building and outreach: Working with CVM and WSU
faculty members and leadership, finalize curriculum
for a bachelor's degree program in Public Health.
Develop relationships with local, regional and state
organizations to leverage and develop experiential
learning opportunities and network with community
partners. Develop an infrastructure plan to staff
the program, including student advising and
recruiting, and engage with the CVM communications
team to market the program.
Scholarly Activity:
Engage in collaborative and applied research and
other scholarly activities. In the short term, this
will be a small component of the position. However,
as the program evolves and additional faculty are
hired, this component could expand.
Academic Service:
Participate at the departmental, college,
university, discipline and national levels. This
could include service such as search committees,
task forces, college or university committee
service, peer review of teaching, and conference
development. Departmental camaraderie and
collegiality through participation in academic
service is expected.
Required Qualifications
(all ranks):
• Advanced degree (PhD
or DrPH) in the field of public health, infectious
disease, epidemiology or a related discipline or a
MD/DVM with MPH.
• An MPH with a minimum
of 3 years of experience in the broad discipline of
public health, including academia, industry or
government experience.
Preferred
Qualifications:
• Demonstrated
experience in the broad discipline of public health,
including academia, industry or government
experience
• Demonstrated
experience in administrative leadership
• Knowledge of
curriculum development or program planning
• Demonstrated ability
to work with interprofessional, collaborative teams
• Demonstrated ability
to effectively communicate with a variety of
stakeholders including students, industry partners,
faculty and staff
• A successful record of
teaching at undergraduate, graduate and/or
professional medical levels
• In addition to the
qualifications above, candidates for Associate
Professor should have evidence of progressively
higher levels of experience and expertise in one or
more areas including public health practice,
teaching, administration and/or
research/scholarship.
